Integrated Rural Technology Centre is the Research & Development Centre as well as Training Centre of KSSP. The Centre undertakes projects in the areas of Energy, Rural Technology, Agriculture and allied areas, Land and water management, Local level planning, health etc. While KSSP is working among people for creating scientific temper in the society which in turn helps them in solving their problems in a better manner, creation of scientific and technological inputs essential for interacting with the society becomes the thrust area of R&D for IRTC.
Agriculture & Allied Activities:-
@ Mushroom Cultivation - developed expertise and infrastructure for mushroom cultivation, mushroom spawn production and training. An average of 1000-1200 spawn packets (of 200 gm.) are being supplied every month.
@ Plant Nursery - mother nursery of vegetables, fruits, as well as medicinal and ornamental plant varieties. Also has a small rubber and coconut garden.
@ Rabbit Rearing Unit - with pure breed and cross breed rabbits totaling about 125 rabbits. Standardized rearing practices, as well as low-cost feeds and cages developed.
@ Pig Rearing Unit - maintaining a piggery unit primarily to manage kitchen waste. Also collecting chicken waste from the neighboring chicken stalls. Is a very profitable enterprise.
@ Composting Plant - plant for windrow composting and vermi-composting. Matured compost are being sold as bio-fertilizer.
@ Aquaculture Lab - an infrastructure of ponds, tanks, and hatcheries for providing support to freshwater fish farmers. Maintaining a brood stock of breeders and producing fish seeds of varieties of carp .
@ Ornamental Fish Culture - different species of ornamental fish are being bred, reared and supplied .
@ Azolla Culture - its a good source of protein. Making fish feed and rabbit feed and now also to pigs.
Technical Departments:-
@ Civil Engineering Division : Investigation, design and installation of small and mini hydel projects. Watershed based master plan preparation and participatory resource mapping for local bodies. The civil works related to solid waste management systems and roof water harvesting.
@ Microbiology Lab : Equipped to handle fungal culture for mushroom spawn production, Bacteriological analysis of water samples, Isolation of microorganisms from agricultural waste.
@ Environmental Lab : It can handle chemical analysis of products develope by IRTC, Water quality studies as per the Pollution Control Board of Kerala Standards, Analysis of the chemical characteristics of waste, compost, water & wastewater, as well as oils and soaps.
@ Electrical & Electronics Lab : developing energy efficient technologies in various areas. Product design, development and testing. Undertaking energy auditing and power surveys and testing.
Rural Engineering Centre:
Highly equipped mechanical workshop carrying out design, development , fabrication & manufacturing of energy efficient devices for empowering rural technology needs. Some significant contributions by the Rural Engineering Centre are: Plastic bailing machine, gas fired kiln, buffing machine, rotary sieve, clay pugging machine, cardamom drier, potter’s wheel(motorized), pedal operated machines, liquid blending machine, powder blender, mould for soap etc...
Pottery Centre:
IRTC is equipped with an active pottery centre. Decoupage, glazes, and modern electric wheels, and Pottery furnace, as well as a clay production mill have made IRTC an important resource centre for the local potter community. Trainings are given in decoupage as well as for quality pottery.
